The Large Hadron Collider

The designers of this machine will smash protons together in an effort to recreate the conditions immediately following the Big Bang. Also, according to some scientists quoted in the NY Times, the LHC has an almost one in 50 million chance of instantly turning the Earth into a "dead, dense lump." It hasn't been turned on yet; here's hoping luck is with us.
