Tom Hanks is surely one of the most lovable acting icons of our generation. His many characters have battled through island isolation and space shuttle malfunctions; they've also flourished despite many handicaps, such as mental challenges ("Forrest Gump"), AIDS ("Philadelphia"), and growing into a man overnight ("BIG," a rare disability, so it still works).
